For those of you who have come to have a session with me, you may wonder why I always give or offer earplugs as part of your reading aftercare.

Well the world is so loud, and the reading is all about internal reflection and growth. Sometimes when you're integrating it's just nice to lower the sounds of the outside world and buffer the onslaught of stimulation of the city to be able to quieten yourself to listen to your inner worlds and sensations.

I've always had an intuitive, process based practice that integrated healing whenever possible. With art it was creatively focussed then therapeutic. With tarot is therapy first, and creative energy oozes all around it. I don't really know if the 2 can really be separated, but the different lenses allow me to access different aspects.

Haha, no! This is art! It's definitely a spiritual healing art, but it's art to me just the same.

UPDATE from Jan 27, 2015

I have been told since then, from various artists in the field, that tarot is a part of my art practice, and that this is not separate from my professional art. This feels very validating to hear, as it feels this way. The way I decorate the cave is the same method as my art installations, the way I follow the vibe in readings is a similar creative process.

It's obviously different in many ways too though. For starters, in my art practice, the gallery space is very public. But my process, and especially my process in social practice spaces, are private as well. We show art works as a finished piece, but the process, the juiciest part, the part with all the conversations, disclosures, and dialgues, are private, and not to be shared.

Looking back on my art practice over the last 20 years, I can see that this theme of private and public has happened throughout. I think of my art objects as amulets, and I don't sell them anymore (only photographs and videos). The role of magic or spiritual process has been a theme in my work as well, more in terms of how I operate and approach art.

I don't necessarily do ritual art, in terms of engaging art audiences publically in ritual. Although ritual work is a big part of my private work, and oftentimes art audiences want to know about that too, and I keep that quiet to myself. It's my personal practice. But it's funny how folks can always feel the vibe, even if they're against spirituality or things like that.
